Arnhem Big game Saturday am. Day 1

Post by Don McHugh » Fri May 04, 2018 10:13 pm

Saturday morning saw the start of the action. We were going to day 4 days of the campaign, but each day was only going to be 3 hours of real time, so speed was very important. Unfortunately this meant I only took picture of the other tables in the breaks between wargame days.

Image

First move sees the para battalions begin to march towards Arnhem. They are allowed to move at 18" a move until fired on or they leave the road.

Image

The larger bases are a very clever way of knowing who is marching.

Image

Paras on the northern route are ambushed in the outskirts of Oosterbeek.

Image

The paras move off the road into cover and move towards the buildings.

Image

Move battalions arrive and follow the first wave.

Image

The paras enter the first buildings and begin to clear the cross roads.

By the end of the first day my para force had only been able to clear the northern half of Oosterbeek and the German force had effectively stopped me marching.

Image

Progress on the southern route had been much better. They had reached the railway without incident.

Image

Image

It was only as they got level with the hospital that they began to take fire.

Image

German troops had arrived from the north to try and cut them off.

Image

This was the high water mark for day 1, but as you can see the battalion has taken heavy casualties and the nearest support was the recce jeeps.

Image

End of day 1 for the rcce jeeps.

The southern force had done very well and got a long way along the river road, but it's supporting battalion was a long way back. It would be a case of trying to get to the bridge first thing on day 2.

We had managed about 14 moves in the 3 hours. We had a very quick turn around for day two.

Really ? Kriegsgefangener Sammelstellung would have been more appropriate.
