Town road try-out
Town road try-out
With the intention of making some town roads, I bought this pavement pattern rolling pin from Greenstuff world - it's the one for 28mm, so I've been trying it out on a piece of foamboard to see how it scales with 20mm, and in a word: not so good... What do you guys think?
I have already ordered the 15mm version, so I'll soon find out if that's better - and hopefully not too small!
Cheers,
Gustav

Greatness is not in where we stand,
but in what direction we are moving,
we must sail sometimes in the wind,
and sometimes against it,
but sail we must, and not drift nor lie at anchor.

Re: Town road try-out
great idea but agree with you that it looks a bit big for 20mm - will be interested to see how the 15 pans out.

Update:
I received the 15mm rolling pins, and have done up a new test-piece. I slapped on some brown, cheap acrylic paint, and added greys and some washes. In hindsight, I should have sealed the foamboard with some thinned down PVA prior to painting, as they are a bit absorbant and fuzzy now... The lighting on my desk is also making the contrast on the pieces look a lot harsher than in real life!
I'm happy with both, and will most likely use the 15mm as the road surface, and the 28mm for raised pavement/town square.
Opininons are more than welcome!
Cheers,
Gustav

What material do you use to make the roads?

Re: Town road try-out
I think both work too. The larger one gives a paving-stone look from a wealthy 18th or 19th century town, while the smaller one has the look of a Medieval cobblestone road. Your painting is effective too.
“We hope to see a Europe where men of every country will think of being a European as of belonging to their native land, and...wherever they go in this wide domain...will truly feel, ‘Here I am at home'.” Winston S. Churchill, 1948.

Foam board - the stuff you can use for posters or architectural models ( or indeed houses for wargaming!). Just peel off one of the card stock layers, and the foam is good to go, and easy to manipulate.

Re: Town road try-out
Wow that easy! Do you reinforce the foamboard with a more solid base?
Re: Town road try-out
No real need - the bottom cardboard layer is stiff enough, but I suppose you could use plasicard to reinforce it further. My plan now, is to use 3mm foamboard for the road surface, and 5mm for pavement. I have tons to do, and hobby time is at a premium, so the town parts of my table are lower on the list right now...
