Truck seating

Post by laurence strong »

Would troop carrying trucks like the "Blitz" have a bank of seats down the middle, or just on the side's of the box, or both?

From the photos I have seen and actual vehicles in museums I have never seen a Blitz with centre line seating. There is not much space.

I have seen photos of them packed with troops who appear to be sitting down the sides and (probably) perched on their kit down the centre. leaning on the cab etc.

Also models of versions with transverse benck seats.

The Bedford QT had centre line seating during the war but I've never seen any German trucks with it.

Not sure what model this is in picture, but I have a couple boxes of the 72 scale Pegasus German transports which have such s configuration. I spent a lot of time in the back of army deuce and a halfs and MLVWs. I immediately shook my head “uh-uh no way” when I saw this configuration on the kits. I think anyone with any military experience would too. It would be a major pain in the arse to mount up and find one’s way to the front and quite hazoourdous as well, especially in darkness. A lot of soldiers would get hurt getting in and out.

Benches along the sides is the best configuration in my opinion for ease of mounting and dismounting. A centre bench would not be bad, but is limited in flexibility of space - you can’t intermingle your kit in the centre or stretch out and i am positive benches along the sides is a superior layout.

That’s my view anyway, I stand to be proven wrong, but my Pegasus trucks will be modified before I finish them. :)

There is film of German soldiers seated in their trucks in just this manner so your first reaction was not right I'm afraid, it was a fairly common practice pre-war, I've also seen Romanians, Bulgarians, Czechs (who probably made the trucks for the other two, and Soviets all seated thus.

Also very common practice with KNIL trucks, as can be seen in a lot of military parade footage from the Dutch East Indies 1940-41.

Started out 30 Fd RCA (Ottawa), then onto 2RCR in '71. Did my 3 year engagement with the Bn and moved on with life. Ended up in the Alberta oilfields and during a down time in '86 I joined 20 Fd RCA (Red Deer) and served the Guns for 16 years.

Academy has those benches with their Opel kit....would the troops sit "back to back" on the bench seats?I can't see many getting seated if there is only one row per bench......
