Colmar Pocket Museum and Memorial Site visit

Post by billk »

Sometime ago I had a chance to visit the Colmar Pocket Museum and the Audie Murphy Memorial site while on vacation. Forgot to post pics here.

The Colmar Pocket Museum started with a young boy picking up artifacts in the area and then snowballed from there. Presently housed in the wine cellar of an old, large Manor House, the museum is looking to move to a new facility in the near future. The quality and quantity of the artifacts, and the high quality of the presentations, made this an amazing (and unexpected last-minute) visit. My pictures don't capture everything, like no pic of the video display, and they certainly don't capture the feel of the place.

Also visited the Audie Murphy Memorial, here is the plaque and a view of the field where he held off the German attack.

@Matt, if you do go, make certain to drive 15mins down the road to the pair of hilltops, and the two towns they overlook, where the Germans and Americans/French fought each other so bitterly. There is a French cemetary on one of the hilltops. Also, there is a local woman who is an absolutely excellent guide... she really, really knows the military history of the area. Driving down the road she can point-out every overgrown pillbox and strongpoint, and most of the time she knows about the battles that took place around the spot. (Her husband is a historian associated with the Colmar Pocket museum and I know she contracts with Viking Cruise lines.)
