Waffen Ss unit sign, France 1940

Post by Alanmccoubrey »

I took these screen shots from a National Geographic tv show, supposedly France 1940. Does anyone know which unit it is ? I've not seen the rectangular sign before (or I'cve forgotten).

THe Waffen SS four digit numbers starting with 98 & 99 were attributed to the LAH...This is possibly Ist Panzer Artillery Regt

That's with the usual anomalies of course. cheers John

John, over on AHF I have had a reply from a Dutch member and he has several photographs of other vehicles of this unit in Haarlem, 15th May 1940. They are the Artillery Regiment of the Division Reich. The pix have the unit sign clearly visible and they also show the SdKfz 5 and Henschel Trucks as tows of their 105s. He gives us the numbers 8801 to 9600 as being issued to that Regiment so I guess that the number visible here is 9052 rather that 9952.

The L could be the gun clearance night reflector? With a reversed L on the other side?

My two cents

You're correct the lines are for night driving, you'll see them on many vehicles during the Panzergrey Years usually on the extreme edges of the vehicle, front and rear mudguards mainly. The 251's rear number plates meant they had to move the lines up onto the body as here.
