panzerfaust200 - Volkssturm - the defenders of Neustadt
So Neustadt seem to be in need of some form of local defenses - it's only a matter of time before those dreaded Russkis/Ami's/Tommies appear and bring to end the peace and quiet that is Neustadt, which seems to have evaded much of the turmoil of the war until 1945.
My main wargaming obsession for many years was the Battle for Berlin. I mean a real obsession (I remember receiving a copy of "The Fall of Berlin" by Read & Fisher one valentines and being convinced it was possibly THE best present ever... ) I read as much as I could, spent hideous amounts of money on obscure books, terrain, figures and models - and became deeply enmeshed in the fabric of it all.
After all the work I've done on Neustadt, I guess it was almost inevitable that there would be an urge to populate it. To see the people who lived there eventually... My initial thought was to add some figures "for colour" after long ago Matt at Elhiem made 'Helga der Milchmädchen' for John and I as we set out many moons ago on our Byzantium oddessy (Matt used to cast our chimneys for us). My intention was to sit these figures within the main Neustadt thread, until I decided recently to commit once again to building a Volkssturm Abt.
Just a few of the titles keeping me visually inspired at the moment...
Yes... this isn't my first venture into the Reich's Dad' Army... many moons ago I even went as far as to write an article on the subject that appeared in Wargames Illustrated and later the SOTCW Journal. I still have those figures somewhere - they haven't seen battle in over a decade.
My recent work on 'Kampfgruppe Wotan' has made me realise I'm actually enjoying painting figures again, however, the constant dotting of the camoflage can be a bit off-putting sometimes. So I figured some simply dressed Volkssturm would allow me a palette cleanser when I wanted to paint and couldn't face more dots!
So this was the beginning of my trip down memory lane...
I'm pretty happy with these, even to the point of not minding showing them at a larger scale...

So the first instalment...
8x figures to become the first Volkssturm Co.
(These come from a range of sources, and I’m trying to leave as many of them unaltered as possible)
2x Hitler Youth (original Battle of Berlin figures from Drew’s Militia, both of which have been head-swapped)
1x CO... more of which later....
Conversions have been limited to head-swaps and a thickening of the armbands (purely to facilitate the painting of details later...)

Re: panzerfaust200 - Volkssturm - the defenders of Neustadt
Managed to get some time in at the workdesk tonight. The figures were all undercoated with Halfords Matt black primer, which I must admit I’m loving. Then the bases were airbrushed with my usual ground colour. Then tidied up by brush. Faces next....
However, two volunteers have already set out ahead of the main body...

The photos I posted here earlier don't seem to have enjoyed being linked to the forum - so I'll replace them with these...

Re: panzerfaust200 - Volkssturm - the defenders of Neustadt
finally some progress...
Faces were completed over two evenings last week - and I've spend a happy few hours today messing about with colours for the troops
Coming up with colours for uniforms when there were no standard uniforms has been a little of a contributing factor to stalling progress.
In the end I've plumped for a mixture of uniform parts, mostly from the Luftwaffe with greatcoats and some tunics from the army stores.
certainly the preponderance of Luftwaffe uniforms in contemporary photographs has influenced my choice.
and no prizes for who inspired the Battalion commander...
