Plastic Primer Spray Paints

Post by Trockledockle »

I used to prime plastic figures and vehicles with a spray paint formulated for plastics from Halfords here in the UK. They have stopped making it. Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement?

I have used the Vallejo acrylic primer in small bottles for a few figures but I think it won’t give a uniform coat on vehicles.

Why do you think the Vallejo primer won't give you an even coat? I've always found it pretty reliable.

Fitz,

I probably wasn’t clear enough. I used a brush with Vallejo Primer from a bottle and found that I got a rather uneven finish with pooling in the low points. That’s okay with a figure but not great with a vehicle. I found that I had a much more uniform finish from a spray and don’t have an airbrush.

I am currently painting a load of 1:72 plastic chaps, I use Hycote plastic primer from the Range, so far works perfectly.

Thanks for the helpful comments.

I tried to buy Hycote but it seems that The Range doesn’t stock them any longer. I contacted the manufacturer a few months ago about a local stockist but no reply.

I discovered these Acrylic Matt Primers from a Firm called Zoro Supplies www.zoro.co.uk I bought the following to undercoat a load of Big Cats :-

Grey SIMP11D 500 Ml £3.39
Red Oxide SIMP13D 500 Ml £3.39
Black SIMP17D 500 Ml £3.99

All inc VAT, price for a 500Ml can is brilliant. Cans were consistent with good coverage. P & P was really reasonable, and the delivery service was spot on.

They do lots of other stuff too.

Hope this helps....Cheers John
