Alan's entry

Post by Alanmccoubrey »

An ancient Matchbox Panzer IIIL, I believe I got this from Will McNally last year when he was clearing out a pal's stash. I also got the scrap Airfix Panzer IV turret from Will some time ago ! If my actually converting the Panzer III contravenes the rules then Matt wll soon tell me I'm sure.

Anyway you will see from the various coloured parts where I've modified the kit to the Panzer III Ausf K standards, that being the command tank with a fully rotating turret armed with the 5cm L/60 gun. They used what was basically a Panzer IV turret to give the staff more room and the chassis was that of the Panzer IIIM with the odd wading exhaust at the back. The commander is from a Hasegawa SdKfz 234/1. The already painted gun/mantlet is froma model of the K which I made about 20 years ago, before I knew that they changed the turret.

Out of curiosity what were the diameters of the PzIII and PzIV turret rings? ?)

I decided to paint it and I have to admit that things got out of hand a little because I've also done a Flammpanzer and a pair of Ausf N with the short 75mm !
I have left them in plain Dark Yellow because I noticed from a Wochenschau that 24 PD had left their command tanks plain as late as October 1943.

And just to show I wasn't lying.

This led me down a real rabbit hole as I had four unbuilt Matchbox Panzer IIIs in my stash and one led to another of course. So here is my final entry !
